In his opening remarks the Treasury nominee also addressed the errors on his tax return that prompted him to pay $43,000 in back taxes and penalties and raised questions about his judgment.

He is expected to be grilled about that during today’s hearing, and tried to head it off with an apology to the committee and an explanation of what he called an “unintentional” mistake.

“They were careless mistakes, they were avoidable, but they were unintentional,” Geithner said.

Obviously, I don’t think this should disqualify someone from a cabinet position, but it’s nice to see that the Obama Administration has its sense of irony in tact, what with the crazy pastor giving the benediction and so forth.
