Tucumcari, NM

I just stumbled into something that really bothered me.

I hate to admit, but along the road I often stop in to McDonald’s.  99% of the time it is to get coffee; it’s coffee that’s everywhere and is reliably decent.

Today however, I was a bit hungry so I was awaiting a couple of cheeseburgers when I overheard a conversation between employees.

They were debating Puerto Rico.

“No, I think you’re wrong, I don’t think it’s part of Mexico!”

“It’s definitely not part of the US!”

“Wait, I think they just voted to make it a state!”

These are verbatim quotes.  For a country that prides itself on being so developed and so advanced, this is completely unacceptable.  I don’t know the reason for these people’s lack of education.  It could have been a number of things.  Poor schools, lack of motivation, no parental involvement, I don’t know.  But no matter what it is, I think it is imperative to improve education in our country; this is just a symptom.

Back in 2004, I couldn’t fathom why people would vote for a second term of George W. Bush, who is now widely regarded as a lame duck, and has been pretty much since his first initiative after his reelection.  Now I know why.
